Men's Rompers - What is all the Rave About?
If you thought fashion for men was starting to get a little dull, you better think again. The latest viral obsession is a trend that may turn the world of men’s fashion upside-down—and that’s the male romper. Say good-bye to onesies for infants only! Instead, expect to start seeing men sporting these pastel-colored jumpsuits that promote comfort-ability and style all at once. Where did they come from, and why are so many people losing their minds over the idea of a man donning a one-piece? You may be surprised to hear that the male romper has existed since the 1960s, but a recent Kickstarter promoting the next summer go-to style for men has launched the male romper back into the public eye. Fondly called the “RompHim,” these suits have been advertised as being perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a beach party, a concert, or a leisurely stroll, and they also feature a built-in zipper to make relieving yourself convenient and quick. What more could you possibly ask for?
If you’re considering adding a male romper to your wardrobe, read on to find out why this could be the perfect outfit for you to wear all summer long.
1: What is a romper?
A romper is a one-piece combo of shorts and a shirt. It began as playwear for children, with the light fabric and loose fit perfect for fast-paced action and fun. Eventually, it became more common for women to sport, with ladies flaunting them as early as the 1950s. Over the years, they have made reappearances in different styles, such as the tube top style, and have been manufactured with a variety of materials. With the introduction of the “sleep romper” for women in 2010, romper suits have officially been resigned as garments only for young children, and have instead become a fashion icon. Most recently, the romper suit has even managed to work its way into the realm of men’s fashion, becoming a style that even men can rock.
2: Did Steve Irwin Wear a Romper?
From what I've gathered. NO.
After further review, I don't know what everyone is talking about with Steve Irwin wearing a Romper. I've searched and searched for any sort of evidence at all that he wore a romper and I can't seem to find any evidence he did.
Although a Steve Irwin Romper would be pretty awesome, sorry guys, I just don't think he ever wore one.
As you can see below, he clearly has a shirt, and shorts on in all three images, and the more you look throughout the internet, he clearly always has two pieces of clothing on.
But, to be honest, a khaki, safari looking Steve Irwin Romper would be pretty cool!
3: Everyone’s talking about the men’s romper!
From Esquire to CNN, everyone on the web is clamoring about the male romper. In fact, global footwear and apparel company Reebok has already hopped on this explosive trend, and is set to release the “ReeRomp” for men in 32 days. So, what has everyone else been saying about the men’s romper?
“The campaign presents the RompHim as a mildly obnoxious, devil-may-care garment for young men with an abundance of money and/or self confidence, who never skip leg day and spend the summer weekends at their bro's house on the Cape.” – CNN
“The onesie and the romper are security blankets made fashion: the perfect item of clothing for stressful times.” – The Daily Beast
“Like Chubbies, its short-shorts predecessor, the RompHim pairs best with Sperry slides, Wayfarer sunglasses (attached via strap to hang around the neck), a well-trimmed beard and a cheap canned beer in a colorful koozie. It was even road-tested at the Holy Grail of bro events, Coachella.” – The Hollywood Reporter
“With just one piece, you've got an entire outfit that's meant to look carefree, casual and right on-trend.” – Today
“There's a lot to thank the bros for in terms of modern menswear. They've brought us boat shoes and fleece vests. They've embraced body confidence in 5.25-inseam shorts. They've even made us rethink what it means to wear a classic gingham shirt. But today, in what might possibly be the bro-iest style move in all of bro style, a new brand launched on Kickstarter that might change the face of menswear: the RompHim.” – Esquire
The launch of the Kickstarter “RompHim” has catapulted the male romper straight into the public eye, and it seems like some are openly embracing this new trend, while others are firmly opposed to it, ridiculing it to the point where even RompHim backers may be ashamed of their investment. You certainly don’t have to be a “bro” in order to look amazing in a male romper, though. Don’t let these negative newsletters stop you from being comfortable, carefree, and fashionable this summer in your outfit of choice.
So, what do you think about the male romper?
We’d love to hear from you on our Instagram @_rusticlub, and don’t forget to tag your post with the hashtag #rusticlub.
4: How do I go to the bathroom in one?
Luckily for you, most male rompers have a built-in zipper to simplify the bathroom process. Women who love rompers often complain about having to get fully undressed just to pee, but fortunately for guys, that’s been taken care of! If you’re looking to do a Number 2, however, you’re going to have a harder time. There’s no quick fix for this issue yet, but at least you’ll be able to sympathize with your lady friends who have experienced the same problem since day one. Simply unbutton the romper and zipper, pull it down to your ankles, and do what you have to do. Until a bottom-flap is invented that can be open and closed at-will (and that does not sound like an attractive look at all), that’s all you really can do.
5: What’s the difference between a romper and a onesie?
We’ve all heard of onesies, but mostly in the context of the type of gifts we should purchase for a baby shower. Onesies for adults do, in fact, exist. They are loose-fitting, casual jumpsuits, typically made from comfortable materials such as cotton or fleece. Onesies became an apparel craze of their own back in 2011, when Ryan Gosling wore one on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and provided the entire audience with their own suits to sport. However, they’re more commonly used as pajamas or cozy clothes to wear while relaxing at home.
Rompers, on the other hand, are often worn as sportswear, evening wear, or for casual wear. Since 2006, playsuits, or rompers designed for women, have seen a huge revival in mainstream fashion. Nowadays, most popular brands offer a variety of romper styles for women, but with the reintroduction of male rompers into the mainstream, popular brands may also begin offering these garments for men.
6: What is the “RompHim”?
Startup company ACED Design has the Internet going ballistic over their Kickstarter that sought to start a fashion revolution. Published on May 13, 2017, “The RompHim: Your new favorite summer outfit” was a project that requested a modest $10,000 from backers in order to produce an outfit for men that would “turn heads and break hearts,” according to the campaign description. Just five days after the Kickstarter was posted, over $200,000 have been pledged by over 1800 backers, showing that the demand for a male romper is unbelievably, and surprisingly, high. And the pledges are still rolling in. For far too long, men have had too few clothing options, and it seems as though there are many out there who agree and are willing to make their voices heard with their wallets.
7: How does the “RompHim” intend to revolutionize men’s fashion?
You might think a male romper only works for those with slim hips, toned legs, and sculpted abs, however, ACED Design promises that their product offers something for everyone. Don’t let your lack of gains stop you from achieving maximum comfort and style this summer. Instead, use adjustable waist tabs that enable any man to achieve a more flattering fit, regardless of whether they are packing a few extra pounds in the midsection. The RompHim also includes stylish buttons down the front, a front shirt pocket, and a zippered back pocket, to detract attention away from those undesirable areas. The pockets also provide great functional value, being deep enough to hold your smartphone, wallet, and more. The extra front pocket also gives you a never-ending store of places to stash your stuff.
8: Is the “RompHim” for me?
If you’ve been seeking a low-maintenance outfit that you can shrug on and instantly look great in, a male romper is the perfect option for you. Stop worrying about whether your shorts match your polo, or whether you should wear jeans or khakis with that sweater. Instead, slip on one garment and go. That’s all it takes. Now, the RompHim’s funding period ends June 13, 2017. After that date, production is estimated to begin in July, and ACED Design will be looking to distribute RompHim’s for those who’ve pledged enough to receive one, two, or three upon completion. The RompHim is offered in a variety of different sizes and shapes, for men from 5’ 3” to men who are 6’ 4”. With sizes that cover XS to XL, there is definitely one size for you that will fit perfectly, especially with the help of the adjustable waist tab. You’re bound to look fantastic in a male romper no matter what size or shape you are.
9: When would I wear a romper?
Not all of us are so comfortable that we’d flaunt a male romper in any situation. They are, however, perfect for a number of occasions, so don’t be afraid to bust it out when the time is right. Male rompers are a perfect fashion statement at parties, especially when you’re looking to move around and don’t want to be bogged down by layers of clothing. And don’t think women are the only one’s who rock a romper at a festival! Whether its Ultra or South by South West, celebs have already been rocking their own version of the male romper to music festivals, like NFL star Cam Newton at the most recent Coachella. Not only are they perfect at any summer setting, such as at the beach, they are also perfect to sport after a day on the slopes when you return to your lodge. Whether it’s rainy, snowy, or sunny, the romper is a viable option for you to wear out for a day of fun.
10: What are popular romper styles?
There are a lot of different stylistic extras added to male rompers, so choose the style that looks best on you. Here are a few different options:
- Front shirt pockets
- Side pockets
- Deep front pockets
- Back pockets with zippers
- Zipper fly
- Adjustable waist tabs
Pick and choose the rompers that offer the embellishments you can’t live without to achieve your best summer look.
11: What materials and patterns are the most fashionable?
A male romper can come in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures, meaning there is one out there that will match your needs and round out your wardrobe. The most popular styles include straight colors, such as neutral grays and beige, as well as pastels in red, blue, and green. These lighter shades make them a perfect fit to wear for the remainder of spring, and all summer long. In addition to solid colors, popular romper styles also feature striped, floral, paisley, Aztec, and paint splatter prints. No matter the color scheme you’re looking for, there’s sure to be a male romper out there that’s perfect for you.
- Solid colors
- Pinstripes and neutrals
- Offset collar and front pocket
- Paint splatters
- Polka dots
Some of these may seem unconventional, but the models are having a fun time as they show off these crazy looks. Don’t let someone else set the trends while you sit on the sidelines. If you want to stroll down the beach in your polka dot romper, you do you! (And if you don’t, well that’s up to you, too.)
12: Does the male romper come in my size?
If you’re a man with a height anywhere between 5’ 3” and 6’ 4”, then yes, a male romper will most likely fit you! The RompHim, for example, is offered to consumers in a variety of sizes depending on the measurements of your chest, waist, and height, from an Extra-Small to an Extra-Large. In fact, don’t give up on the male romper if you’re a little round around the middle. If your favorite pants’ waist size is anywhere between a 25 and a 41, then you’ll find a RompHim that will fit you like a glove.
Looking for a little looser of a fit?
It’s simple to size up or down depending on your clothing preferences, whether you’re looking for something snug or more roomy. Check the sizing chart and compare your own measurements before putting in your order, to be sure your RompHim of choice will be perfect for you. Not only that, but with Reebok looking to put their own male romper on the market, there’s bound to be even more sizing options from this globally known brand. If the RompHim isn’t what you’re looking to don this summer, stay tuned for the ReeRomp, as this garment is bound to come in an even larger variety of patterns, materials, and sizes than the Kickstarter that first popularized the trend. We’ll also be on the lookout for even more brands seeking to hop on the men’s romper train!
13: Is the male romper a new invention?
This might be shocking to hear, but the male romper was first spotted as early as 1964, when Sean Connery starring as James Bond wore a bright blue, terrycloth romper in the classic film “Goldfinger”. This one-piece looked masculine and flattering on the British Secret Service agent, and the belted middle just adds to its charm. James Bond wasn’t the only man in history to rock a male romper, either. Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality also known as the Crocodile Hunter, sported a khaki romper in most of his appearances on screen. Even English actor Tom Hiddleston can be seen posing in a male romper for a photoshoot, and we’ve all already heard about NFL star Cam Newton, and how he wore the RompHim before the RompHim even existed at the most recent Coachella. In addition to these celebrities who’ve dipped their toes into the trend, hazmat specialists, construction workers, waste collectors, and even military aviators have been rocking one-piece suits since the beginning of time, and have looked macho in them from the start. So don’t think rompers are only meant for infants and women. Hard-working men and stars in the mainstream have wearing male rompers for a while now, and the style is not going away anytime soon.
14: What brands offer male rompers?
By now everyone has heard of the RompHim, the male romper designed, created, and manufactured by a brand new Chicago startup looking to upend the realm of men’s fashion. Their product is said to offer everything you could possibly need in a men’s romper; a zipper fly, an adjustable waist tab, and a bunch of pockets to hold your belongings. If the styles offered by the “RompHim” aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, though, then we’ve got you covered. Here are a few other brands that offer less garish versions of the classic RompHim:
- The ReeRomp by Reebok will be available in 32 days, and is expected to have a larger color and pattern selection than the RompHim. It retails for less than the Kickstarter’s RompHim, starting out at $89. In addition, shipping from Reebok.com is free for orders over $49, so mark your calendars and be one of the first to rock a ReeRomp. H&M began selling its own men’s rompers as early as 2013, when it first appeared in their Summer lookbook. The all-denim one-piece comes in a deep navy color with two front pockets and a belt at the waist, making it a more understated, subtle look than the bright pastels offered by the RompHim. With the recent explosion in popularity and coverage that the male romper has seen, it’s likely H&M will start churning out more wearable and affordable designs in a similar style.
- Not only have male rompers appeared on the shelves and racks of clothing-retail stores, they also found their way onto the runway as early as 2013 and 2014. Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons and British fashion label J.W.Anderson were both ahead of the trends and time, sending male models out to strut their stuff in the one-piece suits that would, just a few years later, skyrocket in popularity and dominate the Internet.
- Even online fashion and beauty retailer ASOS.com offers its own styles of male jumpsuits, starting at a reasonable $64.00. Offering waist sizes up to a 40, the ASOS version includes a grandad collar, two chest pockets, and a drawstring waistband to help you achieve your most flattering look. It is also one of only a few male rompers that is offered in black, a color that never goes out of style no matter what season it is.
- Spanish clothing and accessories retailer Zara also provides some options for those looking to get in on the men’s romper trend. Their short denim jumpsuit is made of distressed, bleached material, is sleeveless, and also features button fastening. It’s a look that is perfect for the summer, and can even be worn unbuttoned with a plain undershirt underneath. With a raw edge finish on the hem and arm holes, this male romper has a rugged, masculine flair for those who are adverse to the pastel and polka-dotted RompHims. Retailing at $99.90, it too comes in a few different sizes, and can be shipped straight to your door in 3-5 business days, at no extra cost.
What have we learned about the men’s romper?
Well, it’s safe to say the world of men’s fashion has been shaken up a bit. Just when we thought polos and khakis were our only option as the weather heats up, the RompHim arrives to mix things up, offering men across the globe another great option to add to their summer wardrobes. No matter what pattern, color, style, or embellishments you’re seeking to round out your closet, the male romper has it all. These men’s rompers, also called jumpsuits, are sold by a few different brands and at a variety of price-points, so no matter what your budget or unique style is, you can find one that’s a great fit for you. Some people are wholeheartedly embracing this trend and others, well, not so much, but if you think the men’s romper will be the perfect go-to look for you this season, sport it in style and with confidence. The male romper offers a refreshing take on the classic shirts and shorts combo, bringing comfort and fashion together to make this summer the best one for you yet.You can check out the RompHim KickerStarter Here
